An Ayurvedic Secret For Healthy Hair

An Ayurvedic Secret For Healthy Hair

The Nose Knows: An Ancient Secret For Hair

There's a familiar moment in every hair-care routine. The warm oil, patient hands, the slow work of massaging it into the scalp. It's a ritual most of us know well.

But long before hair oiling became a bottle on a bathroom shelf, Ayurvedic healers were onto it; they found a way that had nothing to do with the scalp at all. They were oiling the nose.

A Doorway, Not Just a Passage

To understand why, it helps to understand how the old physicians saw the body. The nose was more than just where breath came and went; it was treated as a direct entrance into the head itself. And if you could reach through that entrance, you could reach everything behind it: the nerves, the senses, the deep tissues that quietly influence whether hair stays rooted, keeps its colour, or thins over time.

Nasya, a practice that involves placing warm oil, just a few drops, into that entrance. It is a way of nourishing the head from a place external oils simply can't reach.

What the Old Texts Claim

Classical texts are fairly specific about the benefits: hair that protects colour for longer, less hair loss, a calmer nervous system, and clearer eyes. The reasoning is that the oil isn't working on the scalp at all; it's working on the source the scalp depends on.

It's a good reminder that Ayurveda never treated hair as an isolated concern. It saw the whole system, nerves, senses, and tissues, as connected and supported accordingly.

Not a Practice to Rush Into

Nasya comes with real guidelines. It's traditionally avoided right after eating, right before or after bathing, during later pregnancy, or when feeling unwell, anxious, or fatigued. If you're curious to try it, it's worth learning the proper technique from a practitioner first, which we offer, rather than experimenting alone.

Where to Start Instead

If nasya feels like a big first step, that's fine. Most people don't start there. A warm oil scalp massage, like our Cold Pressed Sesame Oil, is the well-worn starting point, and it sets you up nicely if you decide to explore the deeper practice later on.
